What is dialectical behavioral therapy?

While there are many approaches to group therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT) is the core of the program at LifeSync Malibu. DBT has been shown to support a successful and high-quality recovery.

Recovery from an addiction is a difficult and confusing process in which you start learning what happened that led to your addiction. DBT allows you to discover how your thoughts and feelings affect your behaviors. 

By unpacking what’s going on in your mind and what triggers your emotions, you can learn to make better choices as you move forward in your recovery.

Your DBT therapy is a four-week program that takes a deep dive into four principles:

  • Mindfulness
  • Emotional regulation
  • Distress tolerance
  • Interpersonal skills

Through DBT, you’ll learn to put these principles into practice in your daily life.

What other therapeutic options will I have during group therapy?

The team at LifeSync Malibu offers numerous experiential offerings based on your needs, as well as the needs of other residents. However, there are two groups that benefit everyone in recovery:

Relapse prevention

Relapse prevention is a core part of your program because it helps you face the stress of life after you leave the treatment program. You learn how emotions build up until your brain finally triggers the uncontrollable urge that leads you back to drugs and alcohol. Then you learn a comprehensive plan for preventing a relapse.

Psychodrama

Psychodrama is a therapeutic approach that allows you to re-enact past experiences in a safe environment. Whether you’re plagued by painful memories, you struggle with bad feelings about a person in your life, or you lived through a traumatic childhood, your past experiences continue to direct your current reactions and behaviors in destructive and dysfunctional ways.

Until your experiences are recognized and resolved, your past will continue to sabotage relationships and push you to find emotional relief in drugs and alcohol. As you share your memories, your clinician guides you through a restorative process that allows you to see things in a different way.
